Advertising plays an important role in American society. It's influence is pervasive. Clearly it is designed to shape our opinions regarding what to buy, how much and for how long.

There are 4 general categories of advertising:

Brand Advertising, designed to build recognition, preference and loyalty for a particular type (brand) of product.

Informative Advertising, influences you to buy through education you about a products benefits

Comparative Advertising, (and Defensive Advertising in response) comparing a product to a competitor

Persuasive Advertising, appeals to emotions in order to influence you to buy
