In 1994, the School-to-Work Opportunities Act was passed. This federal legislation, jointly funded by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education, provides venture capital to states and communities to implement programs that connect education with careers. Partnerships are created among business, labor, government, education, and community organizations. The goal is to combine learning in school with learning in the workplace so students see the relevance of their academic studies to their future life, explore career options, and learn basic occupational skills.
