2019 ANNUAL TRITON COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION
This year's Triton College High School Art Competition judging took place the second week in January. Five area high schools submitted approximately 140 artworks to make up the show. The artwork was then juried by 3 judges to determine awards. Leyden accounted for 71 of those artworks, which means that half of those pieces were created by Leyden artists! Of those, an impressive number received the highest awards. Leyden students won an incredible 6 of the 7 Best in Category awards, including the Best in Show! Leyden also had 15 first place blue ribbons, 20-second place red ribbons, and 36 third place yellow ribbons.

Artworks were submitted in 7 different categories; drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, design, sculpture, and ceramics. This year, the Best in Show went to an intricate sculpture of Styrofoam cups by West Leyden artist Alexis Roy, titled Cups. Best of Design was a digital photograph by East Senior Gregory Greco in which he actually laid next to a dead squirrel on a road to create his piece. It was titled Road Kill. Best of Drawing was won by East junior Mauricio Hernandez for his pointillist ink drawing of a female astronaut, titled Rise Up. Lilly Olesky won Best of Painting for her modern-day depiction of the famous Edvard Munch painting The Scream, for her painting of the same name. Julia Gryc, West Leyden student, garnered Best of Photography for her colorful summery photo titled, Hammock. Gloria Goray-Regalado’s piece See Me in a Crown which is a many-layered collage with a charcoal portrait won the Best of Mixed Media category.

There was an artists' reception, open to the public, on Wednesday, February 13. Students who received Best of Category awards were recognized in an awards ceremony The work was on display through February 14th at the Triton Art Gallery, Building J on the Triton campus.

    NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 4–8, 2019, to focus on the unique contribution of professional school counselors and their impact on helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

East Leyden's school counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; focus on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

Help us thank Emily Alexenko, Dawn Erickson, Alicia Funes, Justyna Jablonska, Patti Muldoon, Bill Mitchell, Emilie Reynolds, and Chris Schulz for their support and advocacy for our students!

OFFICIAL SAT PRACTICE ON KHAN ACADEMY
Students in grades 9-11 are challenged with practicing for 20+ hours on Khan Academy before spring testing in April. Students are eligible for prizes from Dr. Ritter's office if they register on Khan Academy and accumulate 30 minutes or more! The first prize is a free cookie from the student cafeteria for linking their Khan Academy account to their College Board account and adding Dr. Ritter as a coach.

    Grade 9: KZZ5DTK5
    Grade 10: JDF4KY6W
    Grade 11: MJT3JB3U

More prizes will be given in the weeks to come for practicing on Khan Academy. Research shows that practicing for 20+ hours can raise a child's SAT score by 115 points or more.
Congratulations to the following students for having the highest number of hours for the month of January!
    Grade 9: Patrycja K.
    Grade 10: Anna K.

    STRIVE FOR 95
This semester we will continue our focus on chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is considered missing 10% or more of the school year and includes excused and unexcused absences. Missing just 4 days in the semester can lead to your child being considered chronically absent. Missing two class periods during a school day counts as a Half-day Absent and missing three or more periods counts as a Full-day Absent. Excused and Unexcused Absences count when calculating a student’s attendance rate. We want to make sure you are informed on your child’s attendance throughout the year. You will receive notification when your student is at risk of being chronically absent for the school year. Your child’s attendance rate does not reset at the semester. Each progress report, you will receive an update on your child’s attendance rate. We are asking for all students to strive for 95% attendance this year.

    Attendance Rates:
Exceptional Attendance - 97% or better
    On Track Attendance - 95-96%
    At Risk Attendance - 90-94%
    Chronic Absenteeism - 85-89%
Severe Absenteeism - less than 85%

W każdym sprawozdaniu o ocenach dziecka, tzw. “progress report”, będziecie Państwo otrzymywać informacje o procentowej frekwencji ucznia.
Życzylibyśmy sobie, aby wszyscy nasi uczniowie byli w stanie utrzymać frekwencję na poziomie 95%.

    Skala oceniania frekwencji:
Ponadprzeciętna frekwencja - 97% albo wyżej
    Wymagana frekwencja - 95-96%
    Zagrożona frekwencja - 90-94%
    Przewlekla absencja - 85-89%
    Ciężka absencja - poniżej 85%x

    CONGRATULATIONS
Please join us in congratulating Ms. Sweeney, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Mr. Pecucci, Business Education, for their nomination as Exemplary CTE Teachers in our region. Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Pecucci have been invited to participate in the ILCTE Innovative Curriculum Resources Project’s 2019 Exemplary CTE Teacher Program. The ILCTE Project (www.ilcte.org) is a federally funded project through Carl D. Perkins implemented by the Illinois State Board of Education to provide professional development and innovative curriculum resources to Illinois CTE teachers.

    NEWEST MEMBER OF STUDENT SERVICES!
Penny, a 10-month-old Golden Retriever therapy dog, will be joining the Student Services Department as of January 29, 2019. Penny will spend her first couple months learning Leyden and working specifically with her handler, Counselor Ms. Muldoon. Eventually, Penny’s job will be to work with students to help them overcome anxiety, stress, and other situations that arise. Students and staff are asked to respect the boundaries for Penny as she learns the school. Opportunities for more interaction with her will be available through “Meet-and-Greets” throughout the semester. For those students with concerns or allergies, please see your counselor. The Student Services Department will work to ensure that all students feel comfortable. We are excited for this new opportunity and look forward to the positive results that will come with having Penny with us at East Leyden.

    s

    AP CLASSES
Leyden High Schools encourages students to challenge themselves by taking AP classes, but we also want students to find a balance between coursework and their other interests and activities. Many students are excited to take AP classes during course selection, but then once they begin the classes in the fall, it can sometimes be overwhelming for students to keep up with the coursework.

Beginning next year, students will be limited to 3 AP classes. Students interested in taking more than 3 AP classes will need to get administrative approval from Dr. Karen Ritter.

In addition, the College Board will require schools to order AP exams earlier in the year. We will be asking students to think carefully about their AP classes before enrolling in them, because we expect them to remain committed to them for the duration of the yearlong class.

If students plan to take 3 AP classes, they will need to complete the AP Limit Form with parent signature. Estimated homework expectations are included on page 2 of the form.

Missing two class periods during a school day counts as a Half-day Absent and missing three or more periods counts as a Full-day Absent. Excused and Unexcused Absences count when calculating a student’s attendance rate. We want to make sure you are informed on your child’s attendance throughout the year. You will receive notification when your student is at risk of being chronically absent for the school year. Your child’s attendance rate does not reset at the semester. Each progress report, you will receive an update on your child’s attendance rate. We are asking for all students to strive for 95% attendance this year.

    Attendance Rates:
Exceptional Attendance - 97% or better
    On Track Attendance - 95-96%
    At Risk Attendance - 90-94%
    Chronic Absenteeism - 85-89%
Severe Absenteeism - less than 85%

W każdym sprawozdaniu o ocenach dziecka, tzw. “progress report”, będziecie Państwo otrzymywać informacje o procentowej frekwencji ucznia.
Życzylibyśmy sobie, aby wszyscy nasi uczniowie byli w stanie utrzymać frekwencję na poziomie 95%.

    Skala oceniania frekwencji:
Ponadprzeciętna frekwencja - 97% albo wyżej
    Wymagana frekwencja - 95-96%
    Zagrożona frekwencja - 90-94%
    Przewlekla absencja - 85-89%
    Ciężka absencja - poniżej 85%
