At the meeting on May 15, the Leyden High School Board of Education announced the appointment of East Leyden rising junior Zuzanna Karyta as a student board member. Karyta will serve as one of two student board members, for a two-year term beginning with the 2025-26 school year. Karyta is appointed to the vacancy left by graduating senior Adriel Carrera, who served a two-year year. She will be joined by existing student board member Jonathan Guerrero, representing West Leyden.
Karyta was nominated by social studies teacher Mr. Tazic, who says she possesses a maturity that is well beyond her years which will allow her to be an effective voice for the students of Leyden High Schools.
“Zuzanna is an extremely talented individual with a kind heart and an amazing work ethic,” said Tazic. “She possesses a genuine curiosity about the world we live in and consistently seeks a deep understanding about the issues at hand. At the same time, Zuzanna is equally interested in understanding her classmates' viewpoints and in lending an empathetic ear.”
Karyta is a highly engaged student, who participates in water polo, swimming, ski and snowboard club, service club, Spanish Honor Society, is an ambassador for students who are new to Leyden, and has recently been selected for the Leyden Leadership Program. She is trilingual as well, fluent in English, Spanish and Polish.
“I am proud and grateful to have been selected to serve in this leadership role,” said Karyta. “It’s a big responsibility, representing the school and my peers, and one that I take seriously and look forward to as I join the board.”
Student board members participate in meetings, discussions and represent the Board as the student voice at a variety of events. They do not vote, nor attend closed, confidential sessions of the Board.
“It’s exciting to have an opportunity to help improve our school environment, increase cultural awareness and student involvement, and promote kindness towards others,” said Karyta.
Student board members are nominated by staff for their involvement and contributions to the school and take an oath to represent their school's student body in hopes of better communicating student concerns.
