Seal of Biliteracy
🏅 Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy
In accordance with Section 2-3.159 of the Illinois School Code, students in Leyden High School District 212 have the opportunity to earn official recognition from the State of Illinois for demonstrating proficiency in English and another world language through the Seal of Biliteracy Program.
🎓 What Is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy is an official designation placed on both a student’s diploma and transcript, recognizing those who have attained a high level of proficiency in two or more languages. Illinois public colleges and universities are required to grant world language credit to students who receive the Seal.
📜 Requirements for the Seal
To earn the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy, students must demonstrate:

High proficiency in English, and
-
An “Intermediate High” level or higher in all four language domains—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—in another language through an ISBE-approved language assessment.
💬 Commendation Toward Biliteracy
Students who meet the English proficiency requirements and demonstrate progress toward biliteracy in another language may qualify for the State Commendation Toward Biliteracy. While this commendation does not typically grant college credit, it highlights the student’s language ability to colleges, universities, and future employers.

Both the Seal and the Commendation require students to meet ISBE language assessment criteria, including English proficiency.

Awards will be presented at graduation, and achievements will be recorded on student transcripts and diplomas.

At Leyden, only senior students are eligible to participate in the Seal of Biliteracy assessments, showcasing their proficiency in English and another language.
