Planning Your Future: Key Terms to Know

At Leyden, we use nationally recognized terms to help guide you in choosing courses and planning for life after high school. These terms will help you better understand your options and how your high school experience connects to college, careers, and beyond.

Career Cluster

A career cluster is a group of related jobs and industries that share common skills and knowledge. There are 16 national career clusters, each containing multiple career pathways.

Career Pathway

A career pathway is a multi-year sequence of courses and experiences within a career cluster. Pathways help you explore options and build skills that prepare you for college, apprenticeships, certifications, and careers.

Program of Study

A program of study is a plan that combines academic classes with career-focused courses. It often includes chances to:

  • Earn college credit

  • Gain industry-recognized credentials or certifications

  • Participate in real-world career experiences

Some programs of study can even lead to a college degree after high school.

Pathway Courses

These are the main courses in your selected career pathway. They’re designed to help you explore a specific career area and develop the skills you’ll need.

Related Electives

Electives that support your career pathway or help you build additional skills in related areas. These give you flexibility while still building toward your goals.

External Experiences

These are hands-on learning opportunities like internships, job shadows, and workplace visits. They give you real-world experience in a career area, often in partnership with local businesses or organizations.

Career-Related Activities

Less formal than external experiences, these include things like guest speakers, field trips, career fairs, or school clubs focused on career areas. They’re great for exploring options and building early skills.

Industry Credentials

These are certifications or credentials that show you have specific skills that employers are looking for. They’re often awarded by outside organizations and can help you stand out when applying for jobs or college programs.

College Majors

A college major is your chosen area of study in college. It focuses on a specific career field and can lead to degrees like an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or even a doctorate.

Careers

A career is a long-term job or profession that usually requires education or training. It’s the goal you’re working toward through your classes, experiences, and postsecondary planning.

Capstone Course

This is the final or most advanced course in a career pathway. A capstone shows you've completed the pathway and are ready for the next step—whether that’s college, work, or another experience.
