On Common Ground is West Leyden's Gay-Straight Alliance. On Common Ground offers a safe place for LGBTQIA+ students and their friends to meet and participate in activities as a group.  West Leyden is a welcoming space most of the time.  A place to discuss common hurdles and celebrate common successes is what On Common Ground offers. The Centers for Disease Control compiled the Youth Risk Behavior Survey of high school students in 2016. According to their data, 8% of all high school students, approximately 1.3 million students, report being lesbian, gay, or bisexual. The data also shows that gay, lesbian, and bisexual high school students suffer more trauma in high school than their straight peers. The report can be found here and a summary, here.
