Mr. Phillip Brownlee

Phil Brownlee is the Choir Director at West Leyden High School.   Originally from Iowa, Mr. Brownlee now resides in Chicago, Illinois and is an honors graduate of DePaul University’s School of Music.  There he graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education.  During his time at DePaul, Mr. Brownlee served as the Secretary for the DePaul Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and performed with the DePaul University Singers and DePaul A Cappella, also serving as section leader.    Mr. Brownlee has been fortunate to have many performance opportunities including being a featured tenor soloist for Mass by Igor Stravinsky with DePaul 20+, the role of Prune Vendor in the DePaul Opera Theatre production of LaBoheme, and singing professionally with the Grant Park Chorus and Apprentice Chorale.   

Music has always been an integral part of Mr. Brownlee’s life since he first started playing the violin at the age of five.  Mr. Brownlee would later go on to study violin, flute, and voice throughout his music education journey and finds joy in each opportunity to make music.

Prior to coming to Leyden, Mr. Brownlee taught choir at the middle school level for four years.  Recently, he was the guest conductor for the Elgin Master Chorale Children’s Chorus.   Mr. Brownlee holds his Kodaly Level 1 certification and has completed graduate coursework in CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance). Helping students reach their highest musical and academic potential is the driving force behind his work in the classroom.  Currently Mr. Brownlee sings with the professional choral ensemble "common pulse".  

Mr.  Brownlee enjoys running, bowling, baseball, and trying new restaurants.
