Ms. Karina Hernandez

Welcome! I joined the Science department at Leyden in 2021. I am very excited to be a part of the Leyden community!

I earned my Bachelor's of Science in Animal Science at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. I enjoy learning and teaching students about animals and the natural environment. I continued my educational journey at the University of Illinois-Chicago where I completed my Masters of Education in Science Education. I am also endorsed in ESL/Bilingual-Spanish.

I will be teaching chemistry and anatomy and physiology at West Leyden. As a teacher, I strive to create a learning environment in which all students feel welcome and comfortable. One of my goals is to teach students the life skills necessary for the Science field by sharing my knowledge and life experiences while also incorporating student's funds of knowledge and life experiences.

In my free time, I spend time with my family, friends and my furbabies. I have two shih tzus (Toby & Belinda) and two cats (Flor and Lincoln). During the summers, I visit my family in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico every year. I also enjoy jogging, biking and gardening.

In addition, I've worked in the animal care field since 2015.  I've worked as a veterinary technician in an animal hospital setting for about six years now. I also foster and bottle feed kittens during the spring and summer time.
