Mr. Robert (Bob) Smith


My name is Bob Smith, and I have been teaching at Leyden since 1999. I graduated from Illinois State in the spring of 1986 with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics (minor in History) with a Secondary Education certification. My first teaching position was at Freeport High School and Freeport Junior High School teaching Mathematics and Social Studies. I received my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University nd have completed an additional 45+ hours of post-graduate work including coursework in educational psychology, technology and academic youth development. In addition to my teaching duties, I have coached varsity Girls and Boys tennis for 28 years, and am currently the head coach. In 2011 I was inducted into the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame. 

Outside of Leyden besides playing tennis I work with Drum and Bugle Corps. I have spent 26 years as a marching instructor, visual caption head, consultant and drill designer for drum corps and marching bands around the country.  I was a marching instructor or Visual Caption Head for Phantom Regiment (1987-1997, 2000-2004 and 2015), including the 1996 DCI World Championship. I was also the visual caption head for the Tar Heel Sound Drum and Bugle Corps (1998), served as a visual consultant for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps (2006-2009), and served as a visual consultant for the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps (2011-2014).
