By the end of 9th grade
A student should be supported to:- Know general cost ranges of various post-secondary institutions
- Understand that taking the right courses in high school can reduce the cost of college
- Know how salary impacts the standard of living
- Complete an orientation to career clusters
- Complete a career cluster survey
- Complete an elective course to explore career interests
- Attend a career exploration day (Ask the Expert Day)
- Develop public speaking skills
- Complete a unit on education planning
- Know the relationship between coursework, attendance, and grades to postsecondary plans
- Meet with a school counselor to track progress and/or revise postsecondary plans
- Show evidence of a postsecondary plan
By the end of 10th grade
A student should be supported to:- Outline a plan to pay for college
- Know the estimated cost of each postsecondary option
- Be exposed to a financial literacy unit in a course or workshop
- Know one or two career clusters for further exploration and development
- Know educational requirements, cost, expected entry-level, and midpoint salary for occupations in selected career clusters
- Understand the job application process and terms
- Participate in a mock job interview
- Compare and contrast personal strengths and weaknesses with career choices
- Identify 2-3 adults to support the student through the postsecondary and career selection process
- Know the general timing of postsecondary entrance exams and applications
- Attend a postsecondary options workshop
- Review coursework, and postsecondary/career plans in relation to the ISBE College and Career Readiness Indicators
- Meet with a school counselor to track progress and/or revise postsecondary plans
- Show evidence of a postsecondary plan
By the end of 11th grade
A student should be supported to:- Attend a postsecondary affordability workshop with a family member
- Complete a financial aid assessment with a family member
- Know where to find scholarship opportunities
- Know the difference between need-based, merit-based, and self-help student financial aid programs
- Revisit career cluster interest survey and take a career interest survey
- Visit at least one workplace aligned with career interests
- Interview a professional who is working in the desired field
- Know how career pathways courses and experiences articulate to degree programs at postsecondary options
- Create a resume
- Compare and contrast personal strengths and weaknesses with career choices
- Know entrance requirements, including application deadlines, for expected postsecondary programs of study
- Take at least one college entrance exam
- Identify two related postsecondary paths and/or college majors strongly correlated with assessment results
- Know 3-5 match school, one safety, one reach school for a postsecondary program of study
- Visit at least 3 postsecondary institutions
- Revisit a plan for high school courses to prevent remediation at the college level
- Review coursework, and postsecondary/career plans in relation to the ISBE College and Career Readiness Indicators
- Meet with a school counselor to track progress and/or revise postsecondary plans
- Show evidence of a postsecondary plan
By the end of 12th grade
A student should be supported to:- By 12/31, attend a FAFSA completion workshop
- By 12/31, complete the FAFSA
- Know financial aid deadlines for chosen postsecondary options
- Learn about debt and credit scores
- Learn about savings and investments
- Understand pay stubs, W-2s, and income taxes
- Create a personal statement
- Revisit career cluster interest survey and take a career interest survey
- Compare and contrast personal strengths and weaknesses with career choices
- By 12/31 Meet with a school counselor to ensure all steps in the postsecondary admissions process are completed on time
- By 12/31 Complete 3 or more admissions applications to post-secondary institutions
