Here are some administrative changes for the 2019-2020 school year:
Patricia Makishima is the new Principal for West Leyden High School. She was born in Brazil and earned her undergraduate degree in English Language and English/American Literature from the Universidade de Sao Paulo. She went on to earn a Masters Degree from Aurora University as well as her ESL/Bilingual endorsement. Patricia fluently speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Her entire career in education had previously been spent in U-46 where she started as an ESL/Bilingual teacher at Canton Middle School. From there, she spent 7 years at Larkin High School as a teacher, lead teacher and ESL/Bilingual Department Chair. For the past 12 years, Patricia has been working with their schools from the Central Office as their Coordinator of Dual Language and now English Language Learning. Her leadership experiences in these roles are too numerous to mention and she brings an absolute wealth of knowledge and experiences to the Leyden district, students, staff, and community.
Tatiana Bonuma is a new Assistant Superintendent for the Leyden Distirct. She had previously been serving as the West Leyden Principal.
Anita Huffman is the new East Leyden Assistant Principal for Teaching & Learning. She had previously been serving as the East Leyden Assistant Principal for Student Services for the past 5 years and is very excited about her new role.
Celestina 'Tina' Rivera is the new East Leyden Assistant Principal for Student Services. She had previously been serving as a Dean of Students at West Leyden for the past three years.
Prior to that she has worked at both Morton East High School as a Dean of Students and Westinghouse in Chicago as a counselor. She is currently working on her doctoral degree at Aurora University studying educational leadership. She is looking forward to getting to know everyone over at East Leyden.
