Driver's Education - Behind the Wheel Instruction Summer 2020

On Thursday, June 4, 2020 the Illinois State Board of Education released new directives on allowing certain school activities to resume. Among those directives were provisions that allow for Driver Education Behind the Wheel instruction.Until these directives were issued we were operating under the previous mandate from the ISBE that schools were closed to all activities. When the new directives were issued we immediately began planning as to how we at Leyden can accommodate as many students as possible under the restrictions mandated by the ISBE.

The restrictions include:

  • Allowing only two students and one instructor per vehicle.
  • Face coverings must be worn. You may bring your own mask or Leyden will provide a mask.
  • Open windows whenever possible.
  • Eating and drinking in the vehicle is prohibited.
  • Cleaning the steering wheel, door handles, seat belt fastener, controls, dials, etc. between each session.
  • Providing hand sanitizer.

In addition, all participants must submit to a temperature check daily. Those individuals whose temperature exceeds 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (or 38 degrees Celsius) or who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 will not be permitted to drive and will be refunded.

At this time we are in the process of procuring automobiles and hiring driving instructors. Students will have the opportunity to enroll with a priority given to students with the earliest birthday. Due to the late notice from the state we have a limited number of cars to use compared to previous years. We will do our best to accommodate as many drivers as we can. Students will receive a Google form in their email on Thursday, June 11th at 12pm that they will need to have completed by June 15th at 12pm. The form will ask for their first, second, or third choice based on Session dates and times. Again, we will only have limited spaces this year, but will do our best to accommodate as many students as possible. Students must have a valid Illinois Learners Permit

Payment of $250 will be made via cash, check, or by credit card and is due upon arrival on the first day of the assigned session prior to driving. Driver’s Ed. BTW will be held at East Leyden. A shuttle bus will run between West and East Leyden each session.

Driving times are as follows:

A: 7:30 am - 9:30 am

B. 9:45 am - 11:45 am

C. 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Please check your email for the opportunity to request a pre-registration session via Google Form. Students will be notified via email as to which session they have been assigned.
